| Description | Location: Chase Center on the Riverfront Dr. David. A. Mindell, MIT Professor and prize-winning author, will be on hand to honor the 150th anniversary of the first ironclad conflict between the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimack), which took place at Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862. Rightfully famous as one of the most important encounters of the entire Civil War and marked for heralding the passage from the age of sail, wind power, and wooden ships to one of coal, steam engines, and iron vessels, the Monitor's showdown with the Virginia continues to stimulate interest, scholarship, and debate. In honor of this remarkable 150th anniversary and the inventive genius of the Swedish-American designer behind the Monitor, the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation has arranged for the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia to present at the event artifacts from their famous John Ericsson Collection. | ||
